WHAT HAVE WE DONE?
USING THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS AND LEARNING TO THINK LIKE SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, STUDENTS ARE DESIGNING A NEW AND IMPROVED LAB TABLE! THANK GOODNESS, BECAUSE THE ONES WE HAVE NOW ARE OLD AND UGLY! THEN WE DESIGNED AND BUILT SMALL TABLES USING ONLY 10 PAPERS AND SOME TAPE … THAT COULD HOLD THE WEIGHT OF MANY LARGE BOOKS! USING THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS AGAIN, WE BUILT TOWERS OUT OF 15 MARSHMALLOWS AND A BUNCH OF SPAGHETTI … LEARNING THAAT THERE ARE GOOD REASONS WHY REAL BUILDINGS USE BETTER MATERIALS THAN THAT! WE THEN DESIGNED AND CREATED ELECTROMAGNETS, TURNING ORDINARY NAILS INTO MAGNETS BY USING ELECTRICITY. NEXT WE EXPLORED EARTH'S FOUR SPHERE SYSTEMS! (SAY THAT FIVE TIMES FAST!) WE FLEW THROUGH OUR ATMOSPHERE TO UNDERSTAND AIR PRESSURE AND WIND! WE GOT SOAKING WET … IT'S THE MIRACLE OF OUR AMAZING WATER CYCLE! WE JOURNEYED INTO THE FAR REACHES OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM TO RESCUE LOST SPACE PROBES AND DETERMINE THE PROBE'S LOCATION BY GATHERING AND ANALYZING SCIENTIFIC DATA. WE'RE ALSO WALKED ON THE MOON … AND SUN! OUCH! WE CONDUCTED CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS WITH SEED PLANTS USING INDEPENDENT AND CONTROLLED VARIABLES, AND DETERMINED THE DEPENDENT VARIABLES. THEN WE ARE LEARNED ABOUT MR. C'S FAVORITE SCIENCE WORD... PHOTOSYNTHESIS! WHAT "WERE" WE DOING IN CLASS? TEAMS WERE DETERMINING THE REASON FOR THE SEA OTTERS' POPULATION DECLINE BY GATHERING AND ANALYZING SCIENTIFIC DATA. SAVE THE OTTERS! TESTS THE LAST TEST WAS ON CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS AND PHOTOSYNTHESIS, ON FRIDAY, MARCH 6. 75% OF THE STUDENTS EARNED AN "A"! TEST DATES ARE ALWAYS POSTED HERE AND ALSO WRITTEN BY YOUR CHILD IN HIS/HER BINDER REMINDER APPROXIMATELY A WEEK BEFORE THE TEST. PRACTICE TESTS CAN BE ACCESSED BY CLICKING THE BUTTON BELOW. PRACTICE TESTS WILL ALWAYS BE AVAILABLE TO YOUR CHILD AND EXTENSIVELY REVIEWED IN CLASS. TEST ANSWERS CAN BE FOUND IN YOUR CHILD'S SCIENCE JOURNAL. IN MOST CASES, STUDENTS CAN RE-TAKE A TEST IF THEY EARNED A LOW GRADE. HE/SHE MUST SIMPLY REQUEST A RE-TAKE FROM MR.C. |
Dear Parents/Guardians -
I have a passion for the world of science and love exploring it with my students. I emphasize both independent thinking and teamwork, as well as the exciting process of discovery. There will be a wide variety of topics covered from the state adopted NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) categories of engineering design and earth, life, and physical sciences. There will be weekly and ongoing in-class collaborative team activities. They will learn many new concepts and vocabulary, and learn to improve their communication skills, both oral and written, in order to explain scientific concepts. They will improve their study skills and use their journal notes and other materials to prepare effectively for tests. They must have their Science journal with them in class every day. There will not be any homework assigned, except to study for a monthly test. Each test will be worth 100 points, which will be transferred into a percentage and letter grade.
